AFTER SURGERY CARE

What happens to my child after surgery?

Your child will be taken to the recovery room following surgery until his/her vital signs (heart rate, temperature, blood pressure and oxygen saturation) are stable. If you are in the Day Surgery waiting area or leave a number where you can be reached, you will be called to your child's bedside in the recovery room. From the recovery room your child will be brought back to a Day Surgery bed until he/she is drinking well without vomiting and has gone to the bathroom. Please feel free to ask any questions. The staff will be happy to help you.

What can I do for my child at home?

Pain management - you may be given a prescription for pain medication for your child if the pediatric surgery team feels he/she may need it. Plain Tylenol is usually the only pain medication used. If your child has excessive pain when you return home, please call the office.

Diet - your child should drink clear liquids such as water, apple juice, sprite, popsicles or jello. If there is no vomiting after drinking for one hour, you can feed your child regular food. If vomiting occurs, wait for 30 minutes and then offer clear liquids again. If the vomiting continues, please call the office.

Temperature - if your child has a temperature of 101 degrees or higher please call the office.

Incision care - if the incision turns red, drains, feels warm to touch or appears to be opening please call our office. Some incisions will have steri-strips or a clear covering that will fall off with time. Sponge bathe your child for 2 days after surgery then normal bathing is allowed.

Please call the clinic to make a follow up appointment in 2 weeks.
